Vanessa Williams’ Love Songs collects 12 of her smooth love ballads from across her career. The set includes two songs from 1988’s The Right Stuff, three songs from 1991’s The Comfort Zone (including the number one hit “Save the Best for Last”), three songs from 1997’s Next, and a raft of rarities. A velvety version of the ’60s nugget “Alfie” is taken from a 1996 Japanese single as is a take on another Bacharach/David tune, “April Fools”; “Love Like This” is taken from the B-side of 1992’s Just for Tonight single, and a remixed version of 1994’s “The Way That You Love Me” featuring Roy Ayers on vibes rounds out the list of unique tracks. The disc is a solid sampler of the softer side of Williams and is a fine addition to her discography. It is unlikely that there are too many Williams collectors out there who will be dazzled by the availability of the rare tracks, but they do add a touch of class to a well-crafted compilation that fans of her and of smooth contemporary R&B ballads will find irresistible.

It can be assumed that this 24 track compilation is unauthorized, as it bears no label name (although it does have the catalog number MR1), but it certainly does exist, popping up circa 2000 at very specialized shops. Even with such an extensive number of tracks, this does not have all of the songs from their seven singles; in fact, it has only nine of those 14 single sides. The rest consists of unreleased 1966-68 demos, acetates, and live BBC performances, as well as the 1969 single by the spin-off band Portobello Explosion. It’s a fair but not stunning slice of period British pop/rock, on the cusp of turning from pop/rock of the Hollies/Beatles mold into light psychedelia. The comparisons are obvious — too obvious at times. “You Can’t Be Serious” can’t fail to bring to mind “Nowhere Man” era Beatles with a dash of the Hollies, the demo of “Lazy Man” is a rip-off of “Rain” (although by the time it had been re-recorded for a 1967 single, it was rearranged so that the similarity was far more subtle). They also bravely tackled “Tomorrow Never Knows” for a 1966 single, and while that track has its novelty value as a cover of a Lennon-McCartney tune rarely done by other artists, its far more basic rock arrangement can in no way stand up to the brilliant psychedelic original. At other times they sound like a minor-league Hollies. The Mirage’s strongest suit was probably those slightly spooky, almost churchy story songs, like “The Wedding of Ramona Blair” and “Poor Mrs. Buzby” (the latter from a 1967 unreleased acetate). The CDs sound quality is quite variable; the singles sound pretty good, but the unreleased stuff can be quite fuzzy. For all its imperfections, this is about as good as it’s going to get if you want a full album’s worth of goods by the band, as it’s unlikely there will ever be a comprehensive above-board Mirage compilation, due both to cross-licensing complications and the very limited audience for such an item.

The very first complete recording of Viktor Kalabis’s piano works, as well as the album of his three sonatas (SU 4210-2, Supraphon 2018) have come to fruition upon the initiative and owing to the relentless enthusiasm of the world-renowned harpsichordist Zuzana Růžičková, the composer’s wife and a keen promoter of his oeuvre. Of major importance was the selection of the pianist – one possessing superlative technical skills and having a profound understanding of the structure of Kalabis’s music. As Ivo Kahánek put it: “Kalabis was one of the composers who don’t restrict their ideas by the traditional laws of the piano technique, hence his music is now and then extremely difficult to perform.” Even though Kalabis drew inspiration from the music of other 20th-century masters, he soon arrived at his own, singular and unique musical idiom, which is already palpable in his early opuses. The album maps more than half a century of Kalabis’s work, from the post-war Sonata No. 1 to the masterful miniatures dating from the very end of the millennium. Following the critically acclaimed recordings of his symphonic and concert pieces (SU 4109-2 – Choc de Classica, Gramophone Editor’s Choice), and of the three sonatas, the present album opens yet another window into Viktor Kalabis’s fascinating musical world.
