Atlanta Millionaires Club is in Faye Webster’s feelings, and that’s the way she likes it. “Everything is way personal,” Webster says. “I have to write about very personal things for me to even want to write.” On the 21-year-old Atlanta native’s new album, the omnipresence of pedal steel eschews bluegrass trappings, flexible under Webster’s genre-bending direction. Webster didn’t set out to make it sound like any artist in particular, but she cites Aaliyah as her main musical inspiration for how she uses sound. “That’s where I first heard, ‘Oh, there’s this weird guitar that’s bendy and it could totally be in a country song,’ but the way she’s using it is what makes her music so special to me,” Webster explains. “I try to do that. I try to change the way pedal steel is supposed to sound, or keys, to make it more R&B.” Pulling from a familial lineage of folk storytelling and time spent in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene, Webster’s work is a study of duality, weaving through her own introversion and heartbreak; it’s an idiosyncratic sadness punctuated by fleeting observations and an unexpected, sly sense of humor. And like the way Webster takes the traditional instrumentation of Americana and flips it into something else, she uses her own calm, laid-back demeanor to say you can be boldly and unapologetically yourself in a quiet way, too.

Stephen Duffy’s 1996 solo album I Love My Friends available for the first time ever on vinyl and vinyl replica CD. Following a time of personal upheaval, the album was the result of an unprecedented creativity for Stephen. “The tunes and the words were coming faster than I could write them down. That’s the dichotomy of I Love My Friends. My interior world was falling apart, but creatively it was a charmed existence.” Strictly speaking, this version of I Love My Friends isn’t a reissue. On delivering the album to his label Indolent, Stephen was asked to record two more songs for putative single release. Produced by Andy Partridge, these songs necessitated the last-minute removal of two songs which have since passed into fan lore as two of Stephen’s all-time best: Mao Badge and In The Evening Of Her Day. This release of I Love My Friends restores these songs to the record, honouring Stephen’s original vision for the album. The two Andy Partridge-produced songs You Are and What If I Fell In Love With You? will be available on a seven-inch single which comes with all vinyl copies of I Love My Friends. They are added as bonus tracks to disc one of the CD version. In a 2015 appreciation of Stephen’s career, The Guardian singled out I Love My Friends as a high watermark: “Charming, touching and at times profoundly upsetting, it was a memoir of young loves and naive pop dreams that descended into raw tragedy on The Postcard, in which Duffy comes across a forgotten photograph of himself with a girlfriend who’d since died, and mourns her afresh. Heart-stopping stuff.” In 2003, The Sunday Times wrote “Duffy is creating a body of lyrically lacerating work that should win him gold discs rather than indifference.” While the 2019 vinyl release of I Love My Friends comes with a seven-inch containing the Partridge songs, the expanded 2019 CD release of I Love My Friends comes with an entire bonus disc of songs titled Blown Away – Selected Demos Volume 1.

pronoun, artistic alias of Alyse Vellturo, has at last detailed her debut studio album, i’ll show you stronger, after hinting at its release last year. The album follows her 2016 debut EP, There’s no one new around you. The announcement of the 12-track album is accompanied by the latest single from the project, “stay.” The new song is preceded by the tracks “run,” “wrong,” and “you didn’t even make the bed.”

“stay,” like the previous trio of tracks, concerns the stinging anxiety that accompanies a break up. However, the song was initially conceived with very different feelings in mind. “Oddly enough, “stay” is technically older than pronoun, one of my oldest productions. This song started out as a love song but I threw it away when I started writing There’s no one new around you.” Vellturo said in a statement.

“Here comes the deafening silence/ I can hear every clock ticking/ Wondering if you’re even sincere,” Vellturo sings in the opening of the characteristically soaring tune. Despite the song’s raging, hopeless tone — Vellturo warbles, “Feels like I’m standing the middle and an eighteen wheeler washed over me” in the ballad’s center — “stay” is a surprisingly fast-paced, joltingly catchy track. Vellturo’s adroitly delivered vocals and racing guitars communicate that she will not be moping around for long.

Flowing effortlessly from texted songs to Ayelet’s wordless compositions, where the voice is like another wind instrument, the quartet blends turbulent, contemporary electro-acoustic energies with gentler, klezmer-inspired gestures and jazz-infused improvisations, closing on a wistful note with François Houle’s lyrical arrangement of Tom Waits’ “The Last Rose of Summer.”

In “Who Has Seen the Wind?”, Pneuma use poetry from a variety of places and times, from Christina Rossetti to James Joyce and from Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad to 9th century Japanese poet Izumi Shikibu. The music is deeply rooted in improvisation, with a contemporary-classical / chamber music feeling. The compositions are fully developed, and the cycle is working conceptually with a poetic theme: the wind. (Pneuma is the ancient Greek word for air in motion, breath, spirit, soul.)

Preflyte is a compilation album by the American folk rock band the Byrds and was released in July 1969 on Together Records (see 1969 in music). The album is a collection of demos recorded by the Byrds (then named the Jet Set) at World Pacific Studios in Los Angeles during 1964, before the band had signed to Columbia Records and become famous. It includes early demo versions of the songs “Here Without You”, “You Won’t Have to Cry”, “I Knew I’d Want You”, and “Mr. Tambourine Man”, all of which appeared in re-recorded form on the band’s 1965 debut album.

The album peaked at number 84 on the Billboard Top LPs chart upon its initial release, but failed to chart in the UK when it was issued there in 1973. The album’s title is a deliberate misspelling of “pre-flight”, meant to emulate the misspelling of “birds” that the band had used for their name.

When Lincoln Grounds, Miriam Speyer and Thomm Jutz formed a partnership to create a new record, the outcome was already set to be outstanding.

All three musicians are champions in their respective fields and complement each other sonically. As a professional guitarist playing for The Royal Albert Hall, Lincoln infuses his personal work with various influences ranging from jazz to funk and soul, blues, rock and acoustic music. When the opportunity came across to partner up with Thomm Jutz and Miriam Speyer for Written All Over, the producer and composer felt that the chemistry was undeniable.

To celebrate the release of Written All Over, Audio Network met the group to get an insight into their writing process.

By using his own sensibility and Thomm’s network of connections, the album was due to become a success. Adding Miriam Speyer was a natural choice, as her eclectic background in visceral soundtrack added the rhythm that they were looking for. “For a player, there’s nothing in the world more fun than playing.” Thomm confesses.

The project felt like “the holy grail” for the group due to the level of professionalism, creativity and enthusiasm that they’ve encountered along the path – from producers to fellow musicians to Audio Network. “Going that extra mile and putting the investment in this [Written All Over] has proven that this collaboration was what all musicians and composers aim to be a part of”, Lincoln states.

With talent, chemistry and endless passion, the trio has brought to life a piece of music that will withstand the test of time.
